Malfunction on CentOS 4.8 with gcc 4.1.2

Description

The server doesn't work correctly when compiled on CentOS 4.8 with the gcc 4.1.2 compiler (error message "Connecting entity unknown"). This can be traced to two places in the code which seem to get miscompiled.
